What is Earl Grey Tea?

Tregothnan’s Earl Grey Tea is a blend of rare Cornish tea leaves from our tea gardens and the finest Assam, infused with pure, natural Bergamot oil.

Who was Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey?

Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey, was born on the 13th of March, 1764 and was Britain’s Prime Minister from 22 November, 1830 to 16 July, 1834, and author of the Reform Bill of 1832. He reputedly received a gift, probably a diplomatic perquisite, of tea flavoured with bergamot oil – the delicious tea which has since borne his name.

Tregothnan’s Link to Earl Grey Tea?

Tregothnan’s owner, Lord Falmouth, is the eighth Great-Grandson of Charles Grey, through his maternal line. The connection to the historical tea fame was discovered after planting the first tea bushes at Tregothnan so the validation of our authentic Earl Grey tea was pure coincidence.

A word or two on tea bags.

Our innovative Pyramid Caddy contains our unique loose leaf teas in biodegradable silken tea pouches. All the perks of enjoying loose leaves without the need for a teapot or tea strainer! The pouches are made from cornstarch and are 100% biodegradable and plastic-free.
